DataGrid PickList Column

Hi,
I have a picklist that is basically a list of users within the system, the item id is the userid and the text is the user name. I have a picklist column in a data grid which is a simple user selection that returns a userid to the underlying field. I've ticked the property store item ids but it doesn't store the item id if the column is formatted as ftNone only if it's formatted as something else (ftUser etc). I'm just trying to get a user selection drop down that returns the user id to the underlying data. Tried a combo box but the combo box items display as the userid not the username when formatting the column as ftUser...
All help appreciated.
