Can we use opportunities like this???Your last visit to this thread was on 1/1/1970 12:00:00 AM

We've *never* used the opportunities portion of SLX before. Alright, there. I said it. Let the laughter begin.

We prioritized our sales and prospect efforts based on a different in-house solution we put together. While this solution works well for us, and we don't want to abandon it, there's some enormous benefits from integrating with the SLX opportunities, most of which is a better pipeline report and visibility for our management of the status of key opportunities.

Having said that, in my early poking around, it appears that the Opportunites are "SKU based" - that is, I have to build the dollar value of an opportunity by preloading my database with all my products, etc. But I already do that in my estimating system, and I'm not interested in keeping them in sync on a line item by line item basis.

Does SLX offer the ability to create opportunities for a single dollar amount (which I *could* import or load from my estimating system) rather than a SKU-by-SKU built-up amount? (Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong spot?) Or is this how SLX does it, and anything else would require customization?

Thanks in advance for any guidance you might be able to provide.

Tony

Tony,

We used to do something similar. We had quotes that lived outside of SLX and had opportunities in SLX that reflected what these quotes represented.

How we handled the SKU issue is we created generic 'catch-all' line items. These catch-all items had dollar amounts summarized into them. So we might have a SKU for each line of business and other SKUs for manufacturers (like Microsoft, IBM, HP, etc). Anything you wanted to track independently needed it's own SKU.

From the sounds this might work for you as well.

As for creating a single dollar amount opportunity. This is possible and all you'd really need to do is create one SKU that would be used in each and every opportunity. When someone adds that SKU to the opportunity they'll be able to enter the amount. This works but lacks any kind of detail that would be useful. For example, if you had separate SKUs you could see what's in the pipeline in the next few months for any aspect of your business. You can also look in the past at what's closed. Another example, if you work with vendors, is you can very easily produce reports for you vendors to show them what your business has in the pipeline for them. This helps greatly in getting vendors to provide additional support in closing deals or providing additional funds for events, etc.

John - thank you, that's very helpful. We'll poke at creating the single sku and see what that delivers us.

For us the most important thing is baby stepping our way into this - sounds like your method lets us do this.

Tony - We use opportunities in a similar manner, however we don't use the SKU capability at all....we simply have a currency field representing the total value of the opportunity, and a field for margin %. This allows us to produce reports on close rates, potential business, etc.

Or don't use products at all...sales potential doesn't have to be the sum of the products...

We use opportunities and assign $values, expected close, probability, and product. We do use products, but they are generic in nature and have nothing to do with the $value given an opportunity. We consider products to be informational about an opportunity, not the basis of an opportunity.

I'm with RJ Samp on this. If you just want a numeric value in there, with no detail, don't bother with products.
