Mail Merge problem (7.2, seems to only affect remotes)

One of my clients is having issues with users authoring new mail merge templates on remotes. It appears to affect every remote user, but not network users. The error message when trying to edit a template is:
The Mail Merge Engine encountered an error and cannot continue. There was an error copying "C:\DOCUME~1\{user's network name}\LOCALS~1\Temp\{plugin id}.dot" to "C:\Documents and Settings\{user's network name}\Application Data\SalesLogix\MailMerge\Temp\Preview.dot". The system cannot find the file specified.
The network IT guy swears up and down that these users have full admin rights on their laptops, but I can't find any other good reason why it would work for network users and not remote users. Has anyone run into this before?
