Opening smartpart in maincontent

Hi all,
I have searched the forum for an answer and haven't seen anything yet.
Scenario:
In the Account entity the top half of the page is dedicated to the AccountDetails smartpart. What I want to do is, if a button is pressed on a smartpart it will load a new smartpart in place of the AccountDetails smartpart. I have tried doing this from the Account entity by setting target workspace as maincontent and the various other options but have not had any success.
Does anyone know how to do this?
