Stop InsertOpportunity Page from Loading Items

We have over 6000 items. If I have all items loaded into the system and a user clicks on include product link to bring up the insertopportunity page it takes 5+ minutes to load. The network client has a feature to not load the items on initial load. I'd like to invoke a feature like that. Does any have any ideas where I can start? If you can't tell...this is my 2nd day using sales logix...but I'm eager to get moving.
