basic question about WebClientYour last visit to this thread was on 1/1/1970 12:00:00 AM

Hi,
I have some basic question about the way the web client works:

We only have the WindowsClient and Remote Users using the WindowsClient as well with a remote database - nothing special.

If we introduce Web Client, there are some questions:
+ I suppose all (self made) forms have to be rewritten in order to be "web client" compatible?
+ Does the web client work for remote users with their remote database?
+ When using the web client, the ordinary windows client isn't needed any more?
+ How is your experience with web client: speed, flexibility, possibilities et et?

I have checked several Sage papers but couldn't find answers clearifiying this exactly... So thank you for your answers!

Marty

The main reason for this is to maintain your Data and Process Integrity.
For instance, if you have some custom fields on the Contact entity and they are required, if you don't add them to your Web Client, a new Contact added to the Web Client may not display properly on the Windows Client.
Same goes for any Workflow that you have in place. For instance, if on the Windows Client you have code to add an Activity whenever a certain Status is set on the Contact, you would need to add the same functionality to the Windows client.

Yes, there is one install for the Web Client on which it will run out of a user's Remote Database. The Web runs on a Personal Web server.

You may need it for certain tasks.
For instance, the Manage Products module is not available on the Web Client (this could change on the future, or you could develop your own if needed).
The same goes for some of the Wizards (e.g. Data Replace, Duplicate Find)

When it comes to speed, you have to tune it according to your environment and your customizations.
You have to tune your Database, IIS and your customizations (just like the windows client).
Also, you need to properly size your servers since most of the processing will occurr server side.

Regarding flexibility and possibilities, the Web Client is quite flexible and open. Anything you could do with ASP.Net you could build onto it.
You just need to have the right skillsets and the right tools.

I do agree with you that some of these answers are not quite easily gathered from the available documentation.
You may need to rely on SAGE training (there are some partner training options out there as well) and/or your Business Partner to get most of this information.

And, that being said, I know that this may be an ugly comment to make, but I have run into several customers where their Business Partners were ill prepared to handle Web Implementations because the lack the skillsets and were just trying to get up to speed. I have heard some horror stories from customers that were told certain things were Impossible to do on the Web Client when they were quite simple to achieve. And, my believe is that that wasn't done out of malice. My point is that you should make sure that you rely on someone with the Knowlege and the Experience to help you succeed.
