Are your database and SLX server separate servers? If not that is a great place to start.

First of all, deploy the site with Pre-Compilation.
Second, go through the system once to start building its cache.
Third, Test again.

How bad is your performance at this point?
If you run Perfmon on the Web Server, how is it coping with the site? Is the CPU Utilization kind of high? Is the Memory utilization high?
On the SLX Web server, run SLXPRofiler: Check how long the queries are taking to be completed. If most queries are taking a long time to return data, then your issue could be on the Database server.

Are you running on a Virtual Server? If so, how many CPUs are assigned to the Image? I have seen cases where even though the Image is configured with a Quad-Core, it is only assigned one core, thus if you look at Task Manager/Performance tab, you only see one CPU block. My experience, if you assign multiple cores to match the CPU you will get quite a performance boost.

Also, check your browser settings. Clear your cache (could make it slower at first, but if the problem is corrupted cache it will speed up over time). Also, if your are running mutlipe instances, you would want to synchronize the ETAG (off course, if they are all being served out of a single Host name).

Use Compression, Enable Content Expiration.

There are other more advance techniques (such as stripping down features that are not used), but this would be good to do only after all other Optimization have been attempted.

You could also consider using a browser such as Chrome, rather than IE - last time I tried it ran quite a lot faster.
