Why the Dynamic Web Browser Control wouldn't show on the page...I'm pretty sure anyway

OK, who remembers Gilligan's Island and the '3 hour tour'? (If not, Google it for the theme song, you'll get the idea). Well it all started innocently enough with a project that should have taken about 3 minutes. But then there are the new guys, like me, who spend their lives in VS and with that comes a certain set of expectations, right? GOTCHA!
So let's build a new page with a Dynamic Web Browser Control. One page, one control, one URL, what could be easier? Create the QuickForm, no problem. Create the Page, life is good. Save, build etc etc, we'll be done in no time. Add the SmartPart to the page and configure it all. Put it on a new Toolbar Button on the Customer Portal. Save Build Deploy. Boy this is easy. Meanwhile the wife comes home "almost done dear?", "just about finished." Launch our web site, push the button...hmmm, nothing. Why? Long story short, 3 days later, there's a setting area on the Page configuration for the Smart Part with the harmless sounding label "Show in Mode." I'm going to go out on a limb here, but if there is anything in that box, your telling it how you want your records to display, for example "Details." But what if there are no records, and you're not connected to any table, then nothing at all shows up, not records, buttons, pictures, nothing. As I said, in VS if you had nothing you would see empty controls, but you see controls. But empty that little "Show in Mode" box and all is well again, your Dynamic Web Browser Control happily shows its URL.
Anyway, I finally got off the Island, I don't know if Gilligan ever did...
Hope this helps some fellow sufferer out there.
Tim
PS - Incidentally, this was the best learning experience I've had in a long time. Hours of forced repetative use of the Application Architect that I would never in all the craziness around here have been able to do. I think I did get my money's worth out of it. It was in the end, a good experience.
One thing I should clarify; the Dynamic Web Browser Control was NOT intended to link to any SLX record, such as a contact's Facebook account. It's intention was to simply allow the user to go to one URL for anyone using it and navigate from there, no link to any record. |
