6.2SP4 or 7.0?

fiogf49gjkf0d I have a client currently running 6.2sp3. Heavily customized, remote clients and remote office. I learned a bug they are having is fixed in SLX 6.2 sp4 hf8. I was not planning on upgrading this client until sp1 for 7.0 comes out. But I will now need to move on this sooner than I wanted.
Curious what the community would recommend - Is the upgrade to 7 much more involved than to SP4hf8? I have heard 7.0 referred to as pretty much the next sp as opposed to a major application change. Have those who have upgraded to 7.0 found it stable? Any general gotchas to consider if I go the 7.0 route?
I think I am leaning towards 7.0 but my apprehension comes with it's '.0' suffix. Also I need to complete my certification for 7.0 but plan on taking care of this asap. Any input on this issues is appreciated.

I have gone through the upgrade process now 2 times for our database. Entire process was simple as a SP. The only gotcha I got hit with was the first time.. I removed 6.2 before I upgraded the database. So first step I would do is upgrade the DB before running the install of the Servers and Admin. 7.0 installs .net 2.0 so just make sure the system can handle the the .net.. although not many left I think that can't,, RJ will probably come up with one or two now that I said that...
Anyway been running 7.0 on our test servers for about 3 weeks now and really no issue to speak of.. strange ..  anyway for what it is worth I'd move to 7.0 and at the same time plan for SP1 closer to end of year early next year. |

fiogf49gjkf0d I wouldn't worry about the fact that it is a ".0" release. It really could be considered v6.5 more than v7.0 
I think v7 is great, however, a major upgrade is always going to be more work than a revision upgrade, especially for a heavily customized system. The main problem is the upgrade bundle. You've got potential new functionality in screens that will be applied for screens you've likely already have customized in the database. With a bundle for a HF you're looking at far less plugins to worry about. |

fiogf49gjkf0d I'll echo Ryan and say it's more like a service pack than a major release.
Now that the known and resolved issues lists are published with every update, it no longer makes any sense to blindly "wait for SP1". Evaluate the known/resolved issues. Can you live with the bugs? (There are gonna be bugs, no software is perfect). If you think you can, perform a test pass as you should normally. Does it hold up in your testing environment? It won't take that much time to determine that, unless you're trying to dot every i and cross every t in all your customizations (I do basic things, create a record, edit, delete.). If everything appears to behave normally, go ahead and pull the trigger.
The only time I ever spent an enormous amount of time upgrading was because I converted all of our legacy code to VBScript. I evaluated every customization to make sure it was necessary and in some cases redesigned a good portion of functionality to combat our problem with data integrity. It was a judgement call I didn't really have to make at the time but the gamble luckily paid off now that legacy is getting the axe. |
