Hi all

We have our SalesLogix installation on a Windows 2003 Terminal Server.
It’s a pretty nice machine (ESX attached to a SAN, dual 3GHz CPU).

One user session (i.e. one SalesLogix.exe) is using from 2 to 6 percent while “normal” use and about 10-20 percent while starting the application or processing a mail merge.
Is this normal? Our problem is that 5 users which are processing a mail mere are enough to push the CPU(s) on their maximum capacity.

Of course all other users are feeling this and are forced to drink a coffee till the CPUs are “available” again

There is also another problem with the CPU (yeah I know, one problem is *never* enough…

):
We have some… umm… *special* Groups created by several users. If such an Group is opened, the CPU goes up to 60% for one (!!!) User during five minutes.
The groups aren’t that big, just 100-200 accounts.

In the end it’s just not possible for us to use a Terminal Server… and that’s just bad.
I’m hoping there is just an error or some invalid configuration (but I haven’t found one).
We have about 40-60 SalesLogix users which are online simultaneously.

Our environment:
- SLX 6.2, SP5 (6.2.5.1042)
- Office 2003, SP2 + all updates
- SalesLogix client is running on Terminal Server (Win2k3)
- DB-Server: MSSQL 2005
- 100'000 Accounts

Has someone any suggestions for us?

You don't say how much real memory.....
Memory (and C drive space for user profiles)..... is VERY critical to Terminal servers in general.

Sounds like you undersized the system and probably need a "Terminal Server Farm"

Thanks for your answer.

Our server has 4 GB physical memory.
Max utilization is about 2.5 GB (-> WhatsUp Report).

There is 11 GB free drive space on C.

Maybe your're right and we just need more servers...
But shouldn’t it be possible to host 40 user sessions on one server?
What is a "normal capacity" of one SalesLogix Terminal Server?

Fellmar,

SLX can be 'intensive' but the outside processing such as Mailmerge, Crystal Reports, SpeedSearch, etc. will flat out take your machine doen if too many folks are accessing at the same time. My suggestion is to handle this via architecture. Make sure ALL of your outside processing is handled by a backend server. Combine Mailmerge, Crystal and add-ons on a third tier box.

1st Tier: Database (SQL)
2nd Tier: Application
3rd Tier: Corallary processing

and in your case another third tier: Application Delivery server (TS)

Unfortunately, although it sounds like you have plenty of beef.. it's amazing how easy it is to take a TS to it's knees.
Time to do some process profiling. I'd get a copy of the process explorer (I believe that's what it is) from the sysinternals guys (there's at Microsoft now).

Actually, we have already three Tiers:
1st Tier: Database
2nd Tier: Application Server (SLX Services)
3rd Tier: TS (Client)

We don't use Crystal Reports, nor any SyncServers or other add-ons.
As I said in my first post, already one single user opening a group pushes the CPU to 60% for 4 minutes

However, I will check the processes using process explorer. Maybe, with some luck, it displays an source of error in our system.

I’m really a bit frustrated now… I do like SalesLogix, but the performance issues are just…argh

Hey Fellmer,

We are using citrix and our citrix guy's said you should be able to handle 30 to 40 users per server this is not true when stressed (people using SLX doing things like Mailmerging) our servers will only handle about 5 users. You can try and move the mail mergers over to the network client this will help the load on the TS side but I would agree with Bob that a farm will help you out most. Adding two more TS servers and config as farm should be more then enough capacity to handle 40 users. Cheers ML

Rather "strange" response from a partner....
True, SalesLogix is NOT (specifically) made for TS installs.. BUT neither is 99% of what is out there!

What you are facing has nothing to do with that (the comment from your "partner"). IT's a heavy duty app that requires real memory and power to operate well. Plain and simple. If you want to run a lot of users.. go to the web (based version). No problem running 100 users off one web server.

What is the functionality like in the web version with reguard to reports and mail merges and the like? Are the tools as robust in the web version as the client version? And what about the "re-write" in version 7.2? Thanks ML

The present web has reporting, merge, etc and only supports IE. Some find this a problem - I do not.

IF you can wait, v7.2 WILL be the way to go. However because of non-disclosure rules, etc., we (the partner community) cannot get into any real details of just what is going on there or deliveries, status of any alpha/beta, etc on 7.2. All I can say is that in a "semi-public" event (Summit) and in some press releases there has been some info "leaked".

We will buy new Hardware, that's not the point.
I just think SalesLogix is weaker than other products on TS installations.

But maybe this will change someday.
We will see..

The web client is nice, but we have a lot of customizing and 3rd-party interfaces.
