Hey everyone,

I've had a couple of sporadic issues occur recently where users reported that the system is locked up. I generally by asking if someone has run some sort of crazy report or something like that, then check my server monitors to determine if either the application server or the database server is getting pegged, however, in the last two incidents this has not been the case. I have verified that I am not able to log into the support client (legacy) or the saleslogix client - when I try to log in after clicking 'Ok' the application just hangs. I then have tried to log in using Administrator and Architect and they are working fine.

When this happened last week the problem seemed to resolve itself after 10 minutes, so I assumed it was a report (even though the system performance monitors gave no indication of this), but today I really don't know. I'm just wondering if anyone has seen anything like this and has suggestions of how I might continue to diagnose the problem.

Today we ended up having to reboot the application server, leaving the database server up and running. This resolved the issue.

The application server and database server are both on Dual Xeon 3.16 GHz servers with 3+ gigs of ram. They are running Windows 2000 SP4. I don't have much in the way of 3rd party applications besides a COM service I use to transfer data between our database server and our Iseries (i520) which continued to run normally on the database server throughout the duration of the issue.

Administrator.exe bypasses the SyncLogs necessity. I believe Architect does as well UNTIL you update a plugin, then it proceeds to create sync logs. I may be wrong. I'm guessing the lockout is reported by network users only.

1) I'd check connectivity to the SyncLogs path, especially during the time frame.
2) I'd also check Eventlogs on the SyncLogs server.
3) I'd also check Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SalesLogix\ in both the Sync\* and Cache\* directories. Cache stores a plugin cache and on ocassion could use a purge on both the host and all clients. Sync\ on the server and remotes holds all of the sync internals before they're translated to SyncLogs and the syncservice data.
4) I'd check the SyncLogs folders for any irregularities. Look in Infiles\Outfiles, Archives, and WGLogs. Look for skipped file sequences or date inconsistencies.
5) As a last ditch effort I'd run Regmon/Filemon or the newer utility that combines the two from Sysinternals (now MS). The client may be looking for a registry setting or weird permission. Highly unlikely but worth a shot if you've tried everything else.

I'd say your goal at this point is to look for symptoms that can be traced back to a root cause. The sporatic nature of the problem obviously won't make that easy. If you can pinpoint a symptom to around the time of failure that may help identify what's really going on. I can't say I've seen the problem personally but at least it's a solid point of failure. It'd be far worse if only one user reported the problem and it only happened on their machine for instance.

Thanks for the notes.

I had this happen again, and I checked stuff out to no avail, but then I tried to just stop and restart services which caused some crazy stuff to showup in the event logs. I ended up removing the sync server entirely since we don't have remote offices utilizing the application anymore. I also turned off the speedsearch service for the time being because I suspect it may be misconfigured. I then cleared out WGLogs and a few misc items and things seem to be going well so far.

Thanks again!

The sync server license is most likely the source of your issues and removing it was a very good idea. Now TEFs won't be created which were only just adding CPU cycles anyway. Speedsearch being misconfigured could also be a source of issues so it's good that it's off for now. I believe it's become rather necessary though so I wouldn't leave it off forever.
