Patch Package

fiogf49gjkf0d I tried un-installing SLX 6.2 after a user could not open a crystal report. Plans were to re-install the software. Last weekend we updated SLX to v6.2.6 in order to be proactive about the daylight savings time change. When I re-installed software version 6.2, I received this error:
This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package.
What can I do?

fiogf49gjkf0d I've had that happen as well. There's a MS utility called "Windows Installer CleanUp Utility" that lets you find a installed program and obliterate it's stored MSI packages (they're kept in a hidden directory in Windows, A LOT of them if you frequently update). It's generally a good idea to keep this around or the very least on the radar since I believe it gets updated every so often.
What I do is I run the tool, remove the offending entry which in this case is SalesLogix, then install the same version. I ran into a small problem doing this though. The "network image" stored on the computer was of SP2 and I manually upgraded to SP3. Because there was an SP3 version of SalesLogix.exe, the installer gave me an error and wouldn't continue. I removed the file and the installer proceeded as normal the next time. I suspect what happened was the installer was SP2 and would only overwrite file versions it's aware of. I then upgraded to SP6 and HF1 after that with no problems.
If you wanted to be thorough you could obliterate registry and Program Files locations and then do a full reinstall but because the tool only removes MSI stuff, that really isn't necessary unless you run into multiple errors during a reinstall. |

fiogf49gjkf0d I forgot the link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
I found this because I had Office 2003 give me the same grief. It applies to any program that uses Windows Installer, not just Microsoft products. You'll see the same initial error message and this is usually a relatively painless way to fix it every time. |

fiogf49gjkf0d Thanks... I performed a google search and it stated just as you said. I ran the cleanup wizard and the installation went perfect. Well, except for the case that it did not fix the original problem. The crystal reports are still not viewable to the user. But I'm thinkful for at least this one fix. |
