I know currently there is a workaround for cutting remotes in SQL2005. Is this due to be supported anytime soon? Also, is SQL Express supported for remotes? I am guessing not or this probably wouldn't be an issue.. Thanks

Yes, 7.2 (no release date yet) fully supports SQL2005 and uses SQL Express as the remote database (in fact MSDE is no longer shipped with that version).

As Mike says you will have to upgrade to 7.2 when it's out to get SQL2005 Express support for remotes.
AFAIK there are no plans to support SQL2005Express on any earlier versions of Slx.
