One of our clients reported a problem related to the Slx Mail Merge facility in version 6.1.2:

"There was an error trying to open “C:\Documents and Seetings\ktonning.ENTRUST\Application Data\SalesLogix\MailMerge\Temp\UFLNTA00001H(04-13-2007 03.34.15 PM)QFLNTA007H13.dot”, Microsoft Word may need to be terminated using task manager. This file could not be found."

To make a long story short, I determined that a word dialog was left open "under the covers" so to speak. That's an open dialog which does not appear in Windows but yet prevents both program from continuing. When I was able to access the dialog's purpose, it had to do with Adobe. Not that the mail merge was producing PDF's, but there is was. When I deleted (un-installed) the Adobe Reader, guess what, the mail merge worked correctly.

So, can anyone tell be why and is this a known issue?

Well.. I've not seen this problem in the current supported versions of SalesLogix. remember.. 6.1.2 is a non-supported version and there will NEVER be any more fixes/updates to it. Time to upgrade to 6.2.6 or 7.0.1

Oh RJ,
You have hit a sore spot. This client came to us to do an analysis, mods, and an upgrade to v7. Ah, but before we do that (they begged), just as a stop gap, just 'til we set the requirements,,,could you please install the Web Client. And oh yes, could you solve this tiny little problem, and the next, etc. And could you also help us with this here little bitty mail merge problem.

Time to upgrade..? Their main view are still legacy code. Ah technology, 'got to love it!

Ah! Caught in that .. yep.. we want to upgrade.. but can you make what we have work until we (can) upgrade trap.. been there way too many times. SOmetimes "they" get it.. sometimes thay don't..

Depending on the (client) decision makers this can be an easy or nasty situation..

Not meaning to hijack the topic.. but..
On the web thing.. that's a real bummer considering that the "new" one is in beta.. and you will have to re-do any/all customizations if they want to take full advantage of the new one. We have made full disclosure to our client base (under NDA of course about what is in the (near) future and general direction.. all have backed down form doing anything with the current web product.

RJ,
It gets better: We told them that the old Web Client was going away and that any effort put into it would not be of any real use when the new Web Client is implementated. "We don't care". But it will cost you double. "Don't care". We even showed them info on the new Web Client. "Do it anyway". So we did. Actually they are very nice people who have had SalesLogix for some time now. But the prior consultants didn't do anything for them, and they didn't even understand the concepts behind the Opportunity feature. At this time they really needed to have demonstrated that we could do "something", "anything",...before proceeding. And so we did.

So, back to your original post....

Maybe it is the Word addin for adobe that is causing the problem? Maybe just unregistering the word/office addins for adobe (or not including them on a reinstall) would help this issue?

Ryan,
Yes, that's a very good idea. I'll give it a shot.
Thanks.
