SLX 7.2 - Sharing Customizations with the lan and web

fiogf49gjkf0d Hello all, I have heard rumblings of sharing mods between the web and lan clients in 7.2. What are the mechanics of this? Any way to port existing 7.0 mods in lan to the web? Or is it more of a develop in .net and push to both clients kind of thing?
Thanks

fiogf49gjkf0d The rumblings you've heard are just rumblings. While the future direction for SLX is to support build once and deploy eveywhere, that won't be a reality yet for 7.2. Sorry to disappoint!

Ok, then what is the design basis of the so-called new Web Client in 7.2? I've heard that the same Architect tools can be used for both. |

The purpose behind this new web release is the architecture change. The current web client is a pain to work with. It's based on old, out-dated technology and just not "reasonable" to work with and do serious customization. The move to the new archiecture solves that problem. Big time. You're using modern tools & technology, current standards for development. IMO, many customizations in the new web are actually easier than even doing the same customization in the LAN client, by far. You can add a new entity, drop in some forms for it and get it all in place with minutes, and without coding if we're just taking simple screens. Let's see you do that in the LAN client in the same amount of time .
Eventually, the LAN client technlogy will make the same shift and you'll get the "build once deploy everywhere" that is apparently the circulating rumor. But for 7.2 web, we'll get a few steps closer. These steps are big, and technology wise we'll be ahead of the game for web implementations. LAN just won't be there...yet.

fiogf49gjkf0d I don't know if the UI is subject to change, but from what I've seen, while the functionality and customizations are great, I'm hoping they'll drop in some new graphics and style sheets before the final release. It just doesn't have a nice "look" to it, IMHO. (The functionality and customization capabilities are MILES ahead of where it was.)
Of course, now they need to start working on a web client that uses Silverlight. :p

fiogf49gjkf0d No arguements there Jeff. I don't really care for the way it looks either. The good news is that it is very easy to change. It's just too bad that the default OOTB look isn't more polished. The blue just doesn't really do it for me (especially with the gray navbar).
I'm hoping that they have a UI refresh before RTM, but not really counting on it. At least now that the platform has changed, they can start focusing on the front end for future releases. |

fiogf49gjkf0d Ah, the beauty of style sheets!
As for fixing the UI in future releases, well, it's that and fixing the (known and unknown) defects that ship with the product. Not a slam, as all software goes out that way. Or most does, anyway.
