We are taking a look at upgrading our servers and/or utilizing managed collocation. As part of this upgrade we are going to be upgrading our primary data line and a few bonded T1s as our backup. We don't currently use synchronization/remote database management. To get around this we could set up point to point vpn between us and the collocation. This of course brings up the issue of a network outage and the ability to do work offline in the event the fiber and the copper are taken out by a backhoe.

I have not worked with the remote database management yet.. Is it something I just turn on? Or am I going to have to migrate our customizations? I know there are considerations involved with programing from the different posts I have read. Is there a post or white papers you guys can refer me to?

More than likely we are going to migrate our customizations over to the web version in a years time.

Thanks ahead of time,

Michael.

If you convert to Remote based database operation then your customisations are fully preserved. The only caveat to this is if you have done anything that "expects" the server to be there - in other words, direct SQL queries, injection, views etc. If you've abided by the normal rules then you'll be fine!

It's not something that you can just switch on - you'll need to setup a sync server, cut remotes etc. All of this is in the help file (admin.chm) so you should start there - pretty simple to start but can get a little complicated if you have multiple remote offices. Personally, I'd use a Citrix/TS farm and utilise different POPs to ensure availability !

Regards
Mike
