Natalie,
This is a tricky question since it really deals with your usage. How many remote users do you have..? How much are they working in the application and making changes posting items etc. It also depends on the Sync method your using, how dilligent are the users for keeping up with the sync, yes autosync is a feature for the remote user however it should still be checked once in a while. I have seen companies running 300-400 users on a single sync server via FTP. Each user with their own FTP Folder, painful to setup but easy to maintain. So the real number lies within your organization as to how many many remotes will you have and what type of hardware are you going to be running.
You also have to take into account the length of the sync cycle.. if you have lots of users and 1 sync server, the sync cycle will be longer than if you split it into 2 sync servers. How often do you need to see sync'd data..?
Hope this helps some

Hi Rich, Thanks for replying!!
Basically the one sync server we are currently running is always running on low disc space I I'm forever reminding users to sync. We currently only have just over 8GB of free space so I am trying to figure out whether I would be best requesting from my boss a whole new second sync server or just a much larger hard-drive. We currently have 114 remote users. Some users have small databases with only a few hundred accounts and some users have large databases with up to 7,000 accounts. We do not allow autosync on the remotes so rely on the users to manually sync as often as possible. Yes this does cause problems as some users do not use SLX often so do not sync often. We just have one outfiles folder under the FTP tree for all users files, we do not have indivudual user folders set up. I just wanted an idea of how others have this set up and they manage their remotes!
Thanks again for the help..... |

Natalie, If I were in your shoes here is what I would do and you might not like to hear this..
1. Change the FTP sync location to either be goups like East/West/North/South or give each user their own FTP folders.. like NatMaysInFiles/NatMaysOutFiles, yes this will be timeconsuming to setup but will help manage the users who don't sync that often. 2. I would highly recommend the Autosync for the remotes.. Any reason your not using it..?
Hope this helps |

Hi Thanks for the advise.... we have made a decision. We are going to upgrade the current Hard drive with 2 larger ones for the time being which gives us more time to plan the second sync server. I think if there isnt a limit of users per sync server then we should be OK. I am going to take your advise regarding the users folders. Although I currently use the sync report to monitor the users files as you said it would make life a lot easier if they were in their own folders.
Many Thanks for the tip
